Grief, Loss, and Life Transitions
Navigating Change, Loss, and New Chapters
Grief and life changes are a natural part of growing up, but that does not make them easy. Children, teens, and young adults experience loss and change in many different ways, whether it is the death of a loved one or a major life transition like moving, changing schools, relationship changes, or entering a new stage of life.
These experiences can bring sadness, stress, uncertainty, or feeling like life has changed faster than expected. During times of change or loss, it can be helpful to have a place to talk, process emotions, and adjust to new circumstances.
Grief is not just sadness. It can also look like irritability, anger, guilt, regret, numbness, relief, anxiety, withdrawal, loneliness, or feeling overwhelmed. Some people feel it right away, while others notice it later. There is no right or wrong way to grieve, and everyone moves through change at their own pace.
Grief and life transitions may include:
Loss of a loved one, friend, or pet
Divorce or family changes
Moving or changing schools
Breakups or friendship changes
Starting high school, college, or a new phase of life
Identity changes or growing independence
Unexpected life events or disruptions
Grief can feel contradictory. Even positive or expected changes can bring stress, uncertainty, or emotional ups and downs.
Ways Grief and Change Can Show Up
Support Through the Process
Therapy provides a supportive space to process emotions, make sense of change, and build healthy ways to cope. Clients learn how to express what they are feeling, manage difficult emotions, and slowly adjust to new circumstances.
We help children, teens, and young adults work through grief and life changes in a way that feels supportive and manageable. Therapy can help clients build resilience, stay connected to their support systems, and move forward at a pace that feels right for them. Over time, many people find that while grief and change are difficult, they can also lead to growth, strength, and a clearer sense of direction.
