When Life Feels Heavy, Support Can Help

Depression can make everyday life feel harder than it should. Children, teens, and young adults experiencing depression may feel sad, unmotivated, irritable, or disconnected from things they used to enjoy. Sometimes depression looks like sadness, but other times it shows up as exhaustion, frustration, isolation, irritability, anger or simply feeling numb.

Our therapists work with kids, teens, and young adults to better understand what they are feeling, learn practical coping skills, and feel more confident handling life’s challenges. Many young people feel overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure how to explain what they are feeling, which is why having a supportive place to talk can be so important.

Depression can affect mood, energy, sleep, appetite, school performance, relationships, and self-esteem. When these areas start to feel harder to manage, extra support can make a meaningful difference.

Some common signs of depression include:

  • Persistent sadness, irritability, or mood swings

  • Loss of interest in activities or hobbies

  • Sleeping too much or not sleeping enough

  • Low energy or constant fatigue

  • Difficulty concentrating or staying motivated

  • Withdrawing from friends or family

  • Changes in appetite

  • Feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or hopelessness

  • Big reactions to small situations

These symptoms can look different in children, teens, and young adults, but they are all important signs that additional support may be helpful.

Support for Depression

Therapy helps clients better understand their thoughts and emotions, build coping skills, and gradually re-engage in daily life in a way that feels manageable. Many clients work on identifying and challenging negative thought patterns, improving emotional regulation, and creating small routines that support mood and overall well-being.

At Pikes Peak Family Counseling, we work with kids, teens, and young adults, along with the parents who care about them, to better understand what is going on and what support might be helpful. If you would like help figuring out next steps, you are always welcome to reach out to our team.
